TMJ and TMD

Do you suffer from persistent jaw pain, tension headaches, or worn teeth? If so, you may be suffering from TMJ (also referred to as TMD), a potentially painful structural jaw disorder that can usually be treated successfully at River Club Dental Care to lessen or entirely suppress discomfort and pain.

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction/disorder (TMJ/TMD) is a fairly common problem in that it affects 20 to 30 percent of the adult population, mostly between the ages of 20 and 40. It is more common in females, and although headaches can be caused by a number of different things, tension headaches are a primary symptom of TMJ.

While they aren’t life threatening, up to 90 percent of the population suffers from tension headaches and they can be debilitating. These tension headaches, if caused by TMJ, stem from the jaw joint, surrounding muscles of the jaw, and the jaw itself. Typically a stress reaction, clenching or grinding of teeth (commonly occurring while sleeping) is the primary culprit of TMJ. Our dentists will administer a series of tests to determine the cause of your headaches or TMJ, and develop a personalized treatment plan to treat your specific condition.
